Industrial photography is always on location, at a rig site or gas plant, and without the need to stop any of your operations.  Documenting a process or procedure is the usual goal.  To remain mobile and out of the way, studio lighting is rarely used.  Less “set-up” facilitates shooting in enclosed and tight locations.  Client’s personnel are often required to demonstrate the use of given equipment.

A commercial photography session is "set-up" with a specific goal in mind. That goal is usually to show off a product or piece of equipment or maybe an installation. The arrangement of studio lighting is the key in drawing the attention to this equipment. The use of models or client's employees gives a sense of scale and also demonstrates how the equipment is used.
