Husky Oil Operations Ltd.
The Husky HQ in Calgary underwent a massive renovation.  The first thing you notice is a lot of glass and ambient lighting.  Even the artificial lighting is white balanced to match the ambient coming in through the windows.  As a result the photos had no mixed white balance which is so common in a lot of corporate offices.  If I were to become an engineer again, an office like this would suit me just fine.

Again, the first thing I noticed was the quality of the lighting.  It made shooting super easy and I was able to leave the strobes behind.  I especially like the opaque privacy treatment on the glass and the lack of a defined edge of where it starts.  A very cool effect.  The General Contractor on the renovation was CANA Construction.

This was a very unique shape for a living space.  Aurora Hall, a UofC residence building is triangular with lounges throughout the building which span two stories.  The floor to ceiling windows actually protrude out of the building and flood the space with natural light.  The shape of the room looks a bit odd as the camera vantage point is at the apex of a triangle, so the side walls are not parallel.

This is the large hockey rink at the Markin MacPhail Athletic and Ice Complex.  Right behind me are the offices of Hockey Canada.  What excites me more however, are the beams which support the entire roof.  The product is called glulam, a structural engineered wood.  Concrete or steel beams tend to be straight, while these glulam beams can be curved which allows for flowing architecture.  Very pleasing to the eye and it also has a back country cabin feel to top it off.

The two symmetrical staircases at the National Music Centre were specifically designed to fit in with the architecture of the building, which has almost no straight lines.  The steel construction of the beautifully flowing stairs was a big deal for Walters and a key feature of the project.  Having seen the construction phase of the staircase I was very much looking forward to seeing them finished.  The workmanship shows a lot of attention to detail.

I flew with all of my studio equipment to the University of Florida for a very unique shoot. It was unique in so many ways. It was a very clean location and it was the first time I got to work with a professional model, David Noss. David didn’t have to do much, but his presence in the photos gave a sense of scale to the boilers.

The marketing firm who directed the shoot did a fantastic job managing two distinct goals. When I was setting up, the film crew was shooting a commercial; when I took photos, they would setup for the next shot. We had to alternate our use of the set as photos and video have very different lighting requirements and couldn’t be done simultaneously.

It all boils down to organization ...

Not only did we have two crews working at the same time, but we covered two separate locations in a single day. The second location was the boiler room at the Baptist Hospital, substantially larger and definitely noisier. I was glad to be used to working with earplugs.

CANA High Voltage
Having been an electrical engineer for many years, the opportunity of taking photos of the new 500kV Heartand Substation near Edmonton was a treat. It was like being back in the classroom, and you could touch anything you wanted as the transmission lines were de-energized. I focused on taking a lot of aerial photos as doing so after the line is energized would not be possible. The image shows a corona ring on an expansion joint, supported by an insulator.

The two workers in the shot give a sense of scale to this photo. The dead-end structures and every other component of this project is absolutely massive. Calgary Airport Expansion
What goes DOWN before it goes UP ...
123123
Doublestar Drilling
At the Calgary airport, Double Star Drilling is one of the construction contractors.   Amongst other things, they deal with pilings, shoring and excavation.   They are very good at it and want to show it off.   They asked me to provide the photography for their new advertising campaign.   Mud, dirt and lots of cool machinery, just the way I like it.   Before a building goes up, pilings have to go down, or in this case a manhole installation.   That’s a 12 foot drill bit. Once the drilling is done, to a depth of some 70 feet for this shoring, a beam is inserted and the void is filled with stillcrete.   That’s a mixture similar to concrete but not as solid once it sets, so that it may be excavated away later.

Lift Station
123123
Doublestar Drilling
And now for the pièce de résistance, the lift station, aka. sewage pit.   This will be the lowest point at the airport to which all drains, street runoff and yes, toilets, will free flow under gravity.   From here a pumping unit will push the sewage to the treatment plant.   The pit is large enough to hold the full size excavator at the bottom.   A fisheye lens is the only way to photograph a subject this enormous. This shoot was by far my coolest of the entire season.   A huge challenge to light and compose in a way which shows the scale of the project.   A fisheye is a lens which sits patiently in the bag waiting for just the right time.   This was it.

To top it all off a crane was available for an aerial photo of the site.   I chose to stick with the fisheye to capture the context around the site.   The two excavators help to show off how deep the pit really is.

This is the new helicopter pad on the roof of the Foothills Hospital.   It is also the only shot where the client’s product is clearly visible, the self leveling compound which makes up the entire surface of the landing area.  This was one of the more unique commercial projects I’ve ever had.   For the most part, the product was not visible.   Mapei makes sealants, self leveling adhesives and other products which stick tiles to the floor.   The entire shoot was about taking photos of floors in various stages of constructions or maintenance.   In the span of two days we covered several malls, parkades, office buildings and the new McCaig Tower under construction at the Foothills Hospital.

Documenting the Manufacturing Process
123123
CanDyne Pump Services Inc.
This is industrial photography.   It is everything that fashion photography is not, except for the use of studio lights.   CanDyne Pumps in Calgary manufactures custom skids, this means that each section of pipe is individually measured and welded by skilled craftsmen.   This style of photography is very journalistic.   Without stopping any of the manufacturing the goal is to advertise “this is how we build our skids”.   Check out the following gallery set to see the finished product.

As each piece is completed, it is fitted onto the final skid.   Every element must fit perfectly.   Again, lots of strategically placed lights allow me to move around the pump skid and photograph in almost any direction while hand-holding the camera.   Once the exposure is set, I simply concentrate on the framing of the shot.

I am what you might call a wide shooter.   I love the wide angle lens as it allows me to move close to the subject and I can still capture everything around it.   Without this background the photo would lose its context.   In industrial photography context is the key.

The trick in this kind of commercial photography is to evenly distribute the lighting all the way into the far end of the building, while keeping the studio lights invisible in the shot. Keeping shadows on the walls under control is also a challenge as this inevitably shows where the lights are hidden.

The walls and ceiling are super reflective. This has the advantage of bouncing the light around but also makes it easy to create hot spots which have to be eliminated. It’s a balancing act of small adjustments in lighting until the shot is perfect.

Most of the time, the overhead lights are removed as they are packed away for transport.  Their explosion proof enclosures are so heavy they would put undue stress on the attachment points.  I was pleasantly surprised not to see the usual wires hanging from the ceiling.  The lights left on, gives a very finished look to the overall image.   I like that.
